Do you need an Architect for your project? Does an Architect's license really matter? My builder has a designer who knows CAD and doesn't charge for it. The Lumberyard says they can draw free blueprints for me,,,,
As an Architect, my services often get "shopped" for other options. These are often a builder with an in-house designer, or a lumberyard that has a drafter. Can a Builder or lumberyard draw plans for free? Well, nothing is free. Know, that while they might not charge you, they will pay the person who draws the plans. So, why are they not charging you? Simple, the are using design as a sales tool. Use them for your design and you will either a) have to work exclusively for that builder without getting competitive bids, or b) purchase you materials from that lumberyard without shopping for alternatives. Did you save money? I doubt it, but you will never know!
Instead of using design as a sales tool, an Architect is motivated to provide the best design and professional services available. This is (almost) always in the homeowners best interest! Since I often get compared to builders and lumberyards offering complementary services, I feel it necessary to provide a quick reference chart that compares us. So, I asked the AI app Co-Pilot to give an unbiased comparison between Architects, Builder's in-house Designers, and Lumberyard designers. Here is what it came up with. The footnotes were added by me.
